Like most things in New Orleans, the Upper 9th Wards is described by its location to a body of water. In this case, this neighborhood is west or "above" the Industrial Canal. In an area that became nationally famous after the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, equal attention should be paid to the rebuilding efforts in this area! Local volunteers led by Brad Pitt rebuilt New Orleans-style homes here, and today, this is a great place to find your dream home.
Post-Katrina, a section of the Upper 9th became the Bywater, one of New Orleans hippest neighborhoods home to restaurants, bars, art displays and street after street of classically colorful homes. Given its proximity to the Mississippi River, the French Quarter and the burgeoning Marigny neighborhood, the Upper 9th is full of eccentrically fun options for the entire family via foot, bike or streetcar!
Revitalization efforts continue to this day with new houses being built each year. You'll find similar efforts with the school system where your children can attend charter schools in the Recovery School District. If you're looking for a classic New Orleans experience that packs a bang for your buck, the Upper 9th Ward is a fantastic place to call home!
